Art is a creative subject that develops independent thought. At Key Stage 3, it is studied for two 50-minute lessons with a focus on drawing, painting styles, art movements, critical studies and foundation skills in Art. From year 7, students begin to refine extended writing skills to write on Art Theory.
Key Stage 4 Art is studied from years 9 to 11 using The Welsh Board for GCSE. The course is assessed in two units: 60% coursework and a 40% practical exam. Students explore a range of art processes and mediums such as photography, printmaking, painting, Photoshop, mixed media and research artists of the 21st Century. Art students at Oaklands also take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities from murals to charity work. The subject can lead to professions in photojournalism, web design, interior design, architecture and textile design.
